Rule #1: Enjoy myself.
Yeah, we’ve all gotta scrap for it sometimes. But I have a lot of autonomy. These are my projects. And I want to feel good about making them, I want to feel good while making them, I want the making to feel good.
When I was a kid, discovering computers and writing my first programs,1 it felt exciting and fun and a little magical. I want to feel like that again, now, while I’m working on these projects. It could be said that I am working on these projects because I want to feel that way again.
It’s a nice feeling.
- Enjoy what I’m working on in the moment (and not get all caught up on what’s not done yet)
- Work with tools and systems that feel good to use
- Work with people who feel good to interact with
- Make things that matter to me
