I have, for a long time now, been experimenting with various bits of game and simulation technologies. I've written simple landscape renderers, entertaining mini-games, and even a fairly convincing vehicle simulation. All along I've felt that I should take these bits and turn it into This Thing or That Thing. I should have a vision, a product. I should sell it and get rich! Always the steam runs out and I wind up back where I started, a little bit wiser but not really any further along.
In September 2007 (I often run out of steam in September, for some reason) I went through another round of this, burning everything to a DVD and wiping my drive clean. Therapeutic, but not terribly useful otherwise. I thought that I might put it all to rest, but found I couldn't. Instead, I kept coming back to this line from The Neverhood.
I made a commitment to get myself off the carousel. It took twelve months and another September before the vertigo passed and I could set a direction. Since then, I released a long-overdue update to Premake and wrote a handful of technical articles. I am currently improving the website—also long overdue—and planning a follow-up release for Premake. There is much more to come, but I allow myself only one step at a time.
I create because...I have to. May you find value in it.
